Inspiration from other designs
And yes, inspiration can come from looking at other people’s design work. It’s good to look at the work of designers you admire because it helps you develop taste. Taste is the voice in your head that says you’re not done designing something yet, that you need to keep refining. But when you’re looking at page after page of polished designs, what you don’t see is the messy process behind each of those thumbnails. And seeing all the solutions and none of the process can discourage you from embarking on the meandering path to something great.
So just because the internet has made this the most accessible type of inspiration, doesn’t mean you should interrupt your process to see how someone else solved the problem that you just became aware of. Let your thoughts wander to new solutions.
Inspiration is a concept that is inextricable from our thoughts about creativity, but if we’re not careful, we’re likely to see it as something apart from ourselves that we can only hope for an encounter with. Instead, let your definition of inspiration be one that empowers you to explore and create.
Let’s start at the beginning. First off, find some inspiration.
Many people ask where to find inspiration. There’s no right or wrong answer. For some people it’s reading a book, watching a movie or going to a museum. For others it’s found walking around town or listening to new music. Everyone gets inspired differently. The hardest part is finding out how you’re inspired and taking it from there. Are you stimulated visually?
